    Brief Biography

After completing my undergraduate degree in Indonesian studies at the University of Melbourne in 1988, I was awarded the Indonesian government’s Dharmasiswa scholarship for foreign students to study Javanese language and theatre traditions at the Indonesian Academy of the Arts in Solo, Central Java. After four years in Central Java, I moved to Jakarta, the Indonesian capital.

Since then, I have been involved in a wide range of translating, editing, copy-writing and journalistic assignments for business corporations, media organizations, Indonesian government organizations, and intergovernmental and non government organizations. These assignments have involved the preparation of text for publication in English of corporate profiles, feature articles, annual reports, advertising copy, speeches, parliamentary proceedings, and other materials. The preparation of these materials has involved the collation of data from existing Indonesian and English language materials and the extensive interviewing of cultural figures, senior business managers, government officers at both senior and junior levels, and members of the general public in rural and metropolitan environments in Indonesian, English and Javanese languages.

Until the beginning of 2006, I was employed as the Editor-in-Chief of Garuda Indonesia’s Magazine and other publications for more than two years, a position which has involved the writing of feature articles; the collection, compilation, and editing of feature articles by Indonesian and expatriate contributors; liaisons with the Editorial Board and other officials of Garuda Indonesia Airlines; interviews with central and regional government figures, tourism industry operators, and others; and the training and supervision of a team of journalists, photographers and designers. In this capacity, I traveled throughout Indonesia and abroad, to destinations in South-East Asia, East Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Australia to write and take photographs for feature articles.

Since completing the requirements for my Master of International and Community Development degree, I have concentrated on work in the development sector that utilizes my skills in the area of publications and communications and my knowledge of Indonesian languages, cultures and society.
